n. 1 what is generally said or believed about a person's or thing's character or standing (has a reputation for dishonesty). 2 the state of being well thought of; distinction; respectability (have my reputation to think of). 3 (foll. by of, for + verbal noun) credit or discredit (has the reputation of driving hard bargains). Etymology: ME f. L reputatio (as REPUTE)
